London, August 10: British authorities are cracking down on the many 'tantriks', 'babas' and psychics who prey on the fears and desires of the Asian community by promising them remedies, everlasting love and good fortune.
Most newspapers published in Indian languages here carry hundreds of advertisements from such individuals, promising '100 per cent guarantee' of love and riches, or promising to cure cancer and lift curses.
The soothsayers industry is said to be worth 40 million pounds every year.
Now, authorities in the east Midlands town of Leicester, better known as 'Little India', have announced a campaign against such 'babas' and 'tantriks', most of whom have origins in the Indian sub-continent.
Deputy mayor Manjula Sood said: "I have heard of people being asked for 500 pounds and more for prayers or talismans. They think a curse will be placed on them if they refuse. One recently came to Leicester and took a room at a hotel where she charged clients 500 pounds for 10-minute sessions."
Resham Singh Sandhu, chairman of the Sikh Welfare and Cultural Society, said the Sikh community was lobbying with newspapers to stop publishing advertisements from such people.

This is the way of life for Indian hindu community. This infection is with christians and muslims also! Baba of Babas is Saibaba who does lots of tantrik in front of educated indian. All the stupic educated indians too believe in his tricks and donated 100s of 1000s of rupees. First put this baba behind the bar, all other small babas will be vanished. This is the part of hindu religion, it cannot be changed. the only way to come out of it is to convert to buddism!

yes, this is a step in right direction. but very small indeed as to make any difference. these people are very small fish who can be caught very easily and punished. they are in india and everywhere in the world and in all religions. what about bigger fishes that go around collecting money promising miracle cures. will UK govt take action against people who claim a wholesale and retail rights of miracle cures and go around globe cheating gullible people that dumb can speak or blind can see because of the miraculous powers of their God. if such claims are true, then we dont have to build any hospitals.

This is disgusting! What is equally disgusting is the stand taken by popular TV channels like Zee TV, Sony, TV Asia and likes in the US. I see ads by fraudsters like Ajmeri Baba, Peer Syed Sahib, Pandit Maharaj and other freakin Babas. Why UK and Europe and America and Western World not banning madrassas and speeches in mosques on Fridayd and other muslim holy days where the fanatic muslim preachers preach that killing hindus,sikhs, buddhists,jews,christians,etc are infidels and kafirs and that killing them and demolishing their places of worship will give them heaven after death with 72 virgins and wine.Why these countries are not banning terror book Quran which is the basis fr all terror and violence done all over the world muslims? These are leeches of the society who thrive upon sucking the blood of the innocent and gullible people. They are also known to abuse people, specially the ladies and children. Worst still, even the so called "educated" people fall under their feet. You can find them in plenty on Indian soil and any government which is "responsible" must take action on them. Enlightend people must educate and warn the pulic.
