Incursion indicates China's unease over India's rise: US Experts & Also Publicś Opinion On Public Platform

A US think-tank has said that China’s recent aggression on Indian border is direct result of Beijing’s "nervousness over India's rise."

"Well, I think China is becoming increasingly nervous about India's rise. It's something that they have to deal with that perhaps 10-15 years ago they didn't believe was something that was necessary to focus on," said Lisa Curtis of the Heritage Foundation.

We saw this when they to tried scuttle at the last minute, the civil nuclear deal at the Nuclear Supplier Group meeting last year and so that was sort of an indication that China is not completely comfortable with India's rise on the world stage," said Curtis.

Recently, two soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were reportedly injured in firing from across the border on the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh.

India, however, denied that two of its border guards were injured in firing by Chinese forces.

Curtis said both the sides were mutually mistrustful of each other on the border issue.

"The border issue has lingered for a long time and I think both sides created mistrust on both sides. Perhaps since China is dealing with its internal issue, it has not been interested in completely resolving the border issue but that said. I do not think so either side is interested in any kind of conflict. But I do not see the negotiation moving forward either," Curtis added.

India and China fought a short war in 1962 and, despite burgeoning trade in recent years, mistrust remains.

The two countries have faced off at multi-lateral forums, including Chinese objections to a 60 million dollar Asian Development Bank loan for a project in Arunachal Pradesh.

Reports of Chinese "incursions" have become more frequent of late.

Army launches annual maintenance of forward posts

The Indian Army has launched a massive effort at strengthening forward posts along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, which they described as "routine."

The effort, aimed at operational alertness and kick-started this week, comes at this time annually just before the weather gets worse during winters.

"Nothing much should be attached to this effort, which is carried out annually for maintenance of the forward posts before the weather makes it impossible. This is a matter of routine," Army sources said.

The effort will go on for a month and for the purpose, the Army has employed about half of its strength posted along the 4,057-km-long LAC in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in active duty, they said.

This maintenance effort comes at a time when there have been reports of incursions by Chinese troops in Chumar region of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir where they brought in a military helicopter to air-drop food cans and painted Mandarin letters on some of the stones to lay claim to the territory.

These incursions, the Army had said, were "nothing unusual" due to differing perceptions of LAC on both sides.

Other media reports of Chinese fighter jets violating Indian airspace and firing at ITBP jawans in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in the last three months have been denied by the government.

Chinas uneasiness.By: Varghese Joseph | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 17:00:13 PM Reply | Forward Whether theres a mistrust or not, Iam sad the Indian side is not replying to any sort of border incursions with the Chinese. I prefer to see a determined and solid counter reaction from India to China, which keeps the entire Indian nation joy. To be honest, in any case of eventuality like a Chinese attack into India, Iam sure that whole Indian people would be there with Indian Army, the defence forces. Is there any doubt on that? But the basic things, to prove to the people, that India Govt. looks and is caring for its people, that is not yet conveyed to the people of India. Just protest with media, is not the answer at all. When do we think we cn change our policies?

There are bound to be rogue elements in each country - but those are internal issues and such Rogue elements rise and fall - history has shown - we should not give tomuch importance to such rogue elements. So its for China

First of all india can never in its wildest dreams can match the capabilities of china in its current form. Just taken the conventional warfare china can overwhelm india in a matter of days, check the history if you do not agree with me. Its better for india to stop this hysteria against china and manage its own infrastructure. The chinese are hard working and china is atleast twenty years ahead of india in development, the only thing they lack is the language but by 2020 china will be the country with maximum number of english speakers, check the statistics if you do not agree with me. By then india will not exist in its current form or break into pieces.

Never trust the Chinese.By: Venkat | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 13:45:24 PM Reply | Forward One thing should be clear to our Mandarins in New Delhi. Never trust the Chinese or the Pakistanis and we should make it a state policy to initiate steps to undermine their authority wherever possible-Both within india and in their own countries. At the end of the day we may trust the Americans, the Russians and the French but not the Chinese. Let us not forget the way they tried to scuttle the Nuclear Agreement, their influence in India through the Communist Party of India, their massive support to the Naxalite groups in India, the support they have given to Pakistan and the war in '62. Our government should do its best to develop the North East to counter Chinese influence or risk losing the entire area to the 'Red Terror'.

Indian Army is superior than ChineseBy: Boby Mehta | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 13:13:12 PM Reply | Forward The fact is that a army with three million troops is useless against a small, mobile and well trained and dedicated army. Take the case of Israel, only 300,000 Israeli troops decimated the combined forces of Arabs in 1967 and has never lost a war. It is no use shaking in the boots, the combined strenght of Indian army (only army) is nealy 1.7 millions plus other para military forces. Indians are far more better trained and equipment of India is superior than Chinese. India can give a fitting reply to Chinese, it has not been made public but in 1967 (?) Indian army cut Chinese to their size at Nathu La. The only trouble is Indian political gutlessness and cowardice.

They can create discontent between any two countries of the world for their own selfish gains. The reality is that we cannot match the Chinese in any of the field they have excelled. They have already produced a single dose vaccine for swine flue. They are only next to 'NOWARTIS' in doing so. Now tell me what our scietists are doing? Sleeping over swine flue? The entire world watched the Chinese with awe the way they produced the infrastructure and conducted Olympic games. At present we are finding it hell of a job to conduct paltry Commonwealth games. These are only two small examples to prove their supremacy over all other Asian countries. Beware of Yankee dogs!

The US si our friend and ally now much to the disdain of you pakis. All China has done is to steal western technology and make copies. Mischief MongrersBy: Jayadevan | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 13:13:17 PM Reply | Forward If Soviet Union can be dissolved, China too will be disintegrated into China, Tibet and Xingjiam(?). It is just a matter of time. Now regarding your statement "we cannot match the Chinese in any of the field they have excelled", tell me where India is not matching. China's success is mainly due to population control and single party system. Chinese have one child family system. How many in India will agree to that policy. On that day, India can surpass US, forget about china. Also, politicians in India are also equally responsible. In spite of all these adversities, India achieved this much growth rate. Fianlly, you dont have to be very much proud of Chinese system. In China, some religious people cannot offer prayers even during their holy months. All world, including "Yankees" allows that.

Chinese incursionBy: Jose Sebastian | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 12:32:58 PM Reply | Forward China has off and on intruding into Indian territory and later denying it and this has been the case for long. Of late they are uneasy about our increasing clout and acceptability as a regional power and has resorted to bullying like a school bully who need to be tackled.Looking the other way with the Chinese will be at a great cost for India and history should have taught us bitter lessons. If we remain on hibernation and denying incursions, it will only encourage the dragon to further provoke us and make us on the defensive. We should at least have the means to stand up to the chinese otherwise, we will increasingly have to deal with their aggressive intentions every now and then as their claim on our territory is never ending.

Nationalism should drive our development in Ladakh and NE StaesBy: Anil Gupta | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 12:08:29 PM Reply | Forward Sir, When China was building airports and laying railways deep inside Tibet our leaders were sleeping. When they were building peripheral roads we were sleeping. When they were surrounding our naval boundaries we were sleeping. This has been the general trend of our rulers particularly of Nehru clan. We do not have a long term national perspective in our defence perspective or national vision to safeguard our long-term national interest. It was PV Narsimha Rao who had declared that the area in Indian Ocean is ours and we can not allow any other power to interfere in our area of influence. But unfortunately neither NDA nor UPA-1 or UPA-2 has shown such alacrity in dealing with China. We should develop Ladakh much faster than at present. Similarly Arunachal, Sikkim and other north eastern states be developed rapidly to combat Chinese show of strength through its development of Tibet or other areas adjoining our borders because that affects the morale of our people.

Through the mind of Chinese-2.By: Prabhudayal | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 12:01:30 PM Reply | Forward Indian economy is not any meaningful threat to Chinese, if the numbers alone are a consideration. But, there is a vast difference between the two economies, and how they are basically structured. Chinese richness is tied to trade excess with US and western nations. They have borrowed so much from China, that it is staggering. That number most likely exists only on paper, as the printed currency is recycled back in west. It is certain that that kind of debt can never be payed back in the same form and kind, as the west lacks the urgency for earth destroying mindset to balance the books. Lacking any other acceptable alternative, world has no choice except to live with the same order. If this order fails, and it would and logically should at some point in future, India would gain enormous advantage over China overnight. This natural progression can only be altered militarily; but the price could be unfathomable to the Chinese, as they may be counting pennies for a millenia.
There is more to it than meets the eye...Contd/-By: Sreenivasan Raju Aiyer | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:59:55 AM Reply | Forward Contd.../-Chinese Engineers who successfully completed the Three Gorges Dam across the river Yangtze generating 22000 MW of power have reached the implementation stage of this more ambitious project. Here, they are planning to divert the flow of Brahmaputra towards the Chinese North. In order to bring about this artificial turn in the flow of a giant river like Brahmaputra nothing short of a nuclear implosion would do. So that is what they are planning to do in the last quarter of 2010.Before that they would like to have the entire area of India’s North-East in general or the Arunachal Pradesh in particular under their geographic control so that any opposition to their selfish plans from its neighbour(s) can be silenced by this posture of sabbre-rattling across our borders! China even from its imperialist days is expansionist in nature. Their gobbling up of Tibet, eastern Kashmir (Aksai Chin), Xingjian in the past should serve as an eye-opener for the civilized world.

What India may doBy: Arun | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:55:02 AM Reply | Forward Chinese incursion is the result of many factors. These may be (i) Frustration due to India's progress. China commented with a mood of jealousy on our success in Chandrayan, (ii) China is basically a country to grab more land. This is reflected in their action on Tibet. India's closeness to Dalai Lama is pinch for China. That does not mean we should avoid Dalai Lama. (iii) India is a big competitor for chinese market. Inferior quality Chinese drugs were sold under Indian name. There are many other factors also. Now India must develop the eastern sector to beautiful spots for tourist attraction. These will solve many problems.
Chinese are underdogs!!!By: Atamjeet Singh Bhatia | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:50:59 AM Reply | Forward Chinese are better than Indians in power and technology. They also know all the ways to fight a battle. They are creating problems in North by somewhere placing stone embedded with chinese language and somewhere else misguiding india of there false intrusion. I think India must relaize that china may attach india on some other front like Arunachal pradesh or else. This may help India to build a strong army at other places as well.
Indian submissiveness is disasterBy: sanjay | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:46:16 AM Reply | Forward It is increasingly scary and worrisome, that the indian govt has no concrete understanding of foreign affairs and issues. They treat countries as "friends". China is no ones friend! The only language china will understand is the language of force and might. What is wrong with our stupid leaders??? They are stupid, thats whats wrong! Indian leaders through from history keep repeating the same mistakes again and again. We are invaded, brutalised, bashed (like in australia) and humiliated world over. Can we move out of this "chalega or sab theek ho jayega attitude"? Here is a simple soln to deal with the chinkies: 1.Get ISRO and DRDO to immediately manufacture and deploy a 100 nuclear tipped ICBMs at Chinese cities. 100 nuclear missiles at Pakis. Another 50 ICBMS at US, UK, Aus, Europe. Projection of might is the only language that the modern world understands and give india the much needed respect that it deserves. 2) Recruit another 600 million soldiers.
Through the mind of Chinese.By: Prabhudayal | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:43:53 AM Reply | Forward What goes through the mind of chinese is most important. This article is indeed well written. Chinese have many alarms coinciding simultaneously. The rise of Indian economy and science, civic downfall and anarchy in it's 'arch-friend' Pakistan which has been supported at all costs to weigh down India, and it's internal unrest in key populations at the borders. Chinese in east have been blessed with plenty through millenia; and the only sustainable resistance to their empirehood has been religion, as it flourished in harsh and remote areas which rose to ferocious power relatively briefly during their favourable times. Only by crushing religion, which is a symbol of organised resistance to the chinese, they can claim everlasting victory (did many times !!). Current chinese aggression may be a deep itch for a masterstroke, that would bring Tibetans forever to their knees. It is time to involve Russia and US into the equation as stakeholders;as any other chinese goals seem unchinese.
China is our natural enemyBy: VIMAL JOSHI | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:40:46 AM Reply | Forward Actually China had never stopped to disturbe India and never it will. Actually, there are some relations which are made naturally opposite to person or state and since begining they are such that if even try enormously to track them on road but they are such that they never happend to any good, as it is destined not to happen. The same is with China, Pakistan etc. It will never happen that these countries will be our friend ever and will be in peace with us. If we think so we are a very big fool. China,Pakistan and America have never been good to us, as it was Russia - our reliable friend. At first it did opening war directly, secondly with the help of Pakistan and now is the time to do the deeds with little mixture. China is joining against us with each and every of our neighbours and will never be our friend. So we have to help ourselves by not taking mild decisions against any thing that is against our country at any rate, pace, time and matter. We must not live in oblivion.JAI HIND
Congress 'Bad Luck For India'By: wiser | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:40:23 AM Reply | Forward While there are reports of chinese intrusion poping up increasingly by the length of day , the downplay from the govt is awe struck. Two possiblities , one the govt keen to disguise the eastern neighbour and meanwhile try to fill the backlog of the detterent on NE border . Second one to disguise its own poeple while soldiers are being shot at by PLA. The second would be catastrophic for India and there is not much reason not to beleive that. The history of congress and its policy makers are supportive of that. They coined "HINDI CHINI BHAI BHAI" when china was rolling tanks in Assamese plains. Such is the pathetic policy of congress, result of which we have pakistan claiming on ICT(Indian controlled Kashmir) while it already has POK on west and China controlling 1/3 of Kasmir as Aksai Chin and laying claims over entire Arunanchal pradesh in addition to Sikkim. Congress never woke up from the dreams of being champions of non-violence.

Action not Reaction !By: Thomas Sarasam | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:12:49 AM Reply | Forward Chineese or Bangaladeshis or whoever! Our Border security policy should not depend on who is intruding from where ? It should rather be at the best interests of the people of India. Best interests as in Safetly and security, financially, poilitically, culturally and of course physcially. Sealing the borders and using BSF, ITBF and other similar forces to patrol Stringently is the only solution to this menace.
Easy method to circumvent the chinese By: Indo Canadian | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 11:10:01 AM Reply | Forward It is easy to circumvent the Chinese. Develop a super city in the east from the ground up to act as the regions Mumbai or Dehli, this will increase development in the region and solidify Indian claim to the land. It's one thing sending your soldiers into a wasteland or a jungle and painting a few rocks, but it is impossible to make the same statement by sending your soldiers into a city.

Chinese IncursionsBy: VR Venugopal Rao | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 10:48:15 AM Reply | Forward There is no use of blaming incursions. Prevention is better than cure. India should build up more Armed Forces along borders and concentrate on developing North east states on par with other states. Armed forces should play dual role both as a Security Agency and also as a Contributor to Development of Areas like Border Roads Organisation. Huge Investements are made in Infrastructure mainly on Highways. There are many areas in North east which do not have access to Roads which is the main reason for rising insurgency in North starting from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur etc. Incursions are also happening from Bangladesh which are not coming to light. West Bengal has highest Migration from Bangladesh due to language coincidence and becomes difficult for the security agencies to detect these people. Seal the Borders, maintain highest vigil, there is high rate of unemployment, youth can be recruited in large numbers for protecting the borders.

All these are not very dificult, provided we have will and all Political parties cooperate.I believe, after this preparedness China will forget to even blink. Next target should be that in case of war, we should be in position to recapture our lost land.
How come !By: chanakya | Thursday , 17 Sep '09 10:41:17 AM Reply | Forward The entire world has witnessed the incursion by the pygmies but why Indian govt wants to ignore and argue that nothing has happened. Is it a strategy or weakness ? Chinese are the last population to be believed . They have shown what they are in Pandit Nehru times and I don't think any of the present generation leaders can come any where near to those generations in policy making. The dragon must be hunted and kept at bay. Else it will devour what ever it comes on its way. Instead of enjoying joy rides it is time for some stren action along the borders. It would be interesting to know the reactions of some of the prestigeous new papers who day in day out support the dragon on all counts.
