Jamshedpur, July 1: Steel city doctors celebrated Doctors’ Day today with aplomb.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Tata Motors Medical Society marked Doctor’s Day by paying tribute to Bidhan Chandra Roy, renowned physician and former chief minister of Bengal. Both the medical associations acknowledged the importance and contribution of doctors to the society.

Tata Motors Medical Society organised a function in honour of Roy at Tata Motors Hospital. “Roy was the only doctor from India to become a member of the Royal College of Medicine in England. He also served as a personal physician to Jawaharlal Nehru and S. Radhakrishnan and participated in the freedom struggle. It is because of his pioneering spirit, hard work and dedication to his patients that we honour him today,” said A.K. Paul, a senior doctor at Tata Motors Hospital addressing the function.

Free medical check-ups were organised on a first-come-first-serve basis by the hospital. Diabetic health check-up, hepatitis-B screening and vaccination, bone density test and chest screening test were among the free medical tests carried out in the out patient department of the hospital. Many patients at the camp were unaware of the serious symptoms they carried. The medical councillors and supervisors informed the patients about their symptoms.

More than 200 persons benefited from this health camp. “This free health camp has made me aware that I have diabetic symptoms thanks to the doctors here. They have told me to avoid food, which contain a lot of sugar,” said a patient. “The check-up camps conducted today were successful,” said Manitosh Ray, general manager (medical services) at Tata Motors Hospital. “We used a bone densitometer machine for carrying out the density test, which is not available anywhere else in Jharkhand,” he added.

The IMA’s Jamshedpur chapter commemorated the spirit of Roy in their programme held at the Institute of Engineers in Sakchi. IMA honoured doctors for their contribution to medical field and for services rendered to society. Among the doctors felicitated were A.B. Balsara, Indrajeet Gorai, Beena Singh, B.K. Chaudhary and B. Mahanta.

“We value the contributions of Roy in shaping a better society for future generations,” said honorary secretary of IMA, Mrityunjay Singh, adding that IMA was felicitating the doctors who have upheld these strong ideals in their work of healing people.
